Dr. Pitcairn graduated from University of California, Davis veterinary school in 1965. In 1972 he completed his PhD degree in microbiology at Washington State University. As a WSU faculty member researching factors affecting natural resistance to disease, he understood the importance of optimal nutrition; realizing such research would not be funded, he re-entered private practice to apply his study of the effect of nutrition on immunity. After he moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1985, he began offering homeopathy workshops to the public, and In 1992, he established the Professional Course in Veterinary Homeopathy. By 2013, 500 veterinarians had participated in this program. In 1995, Dr. Pitcairn co-founded the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy.
