The ownership of Solutions Pet Products isn’t clear. One member of the team was a founder of Answers Pet Food. Others were associated with Answers and are veterans of the dog food industry. It appears the farmers that provided ingredients for Answers, are now sources for Solutions.

Solutions produces raw dog food for dogs and cats. They also produce raw goat milk. They offer gelatin, herbal supplements and cheeses for dogs. They do not use HPP for pathogen control.

The company headquarters is in Littleton, CO. The Company makes its cheeses at a creamery in Millersburg, PA. They manufacture the other foods and products at Rocky Ridge Cold Storage, Lykens, PA.

IS SOLUTIONS A GOOD DOG FOOD?

Solutions Pet Products are a low risk dog food by our criteria. There are 3 raw recipes. The average protein is 42% on an as fed basis. This is for comparison with dry foods. Average carbohydrate level is 4%. This is calculated on a dry matter basis. This is exactly what’s expected in raw dog food.

The overall score is 9.8/10 as one of the recipes is higher in fat than protein. Fat is a valuable macronutrient. However, it’s relatively devoid of nutrients. High fat diets can lead to unwanted changes in the gut flora. There are no added vitamins and minerals in these recipes. This indicates nutrients are from listed ingredients.

All recipes score 10/10 for ingredient safety. This is due to minimal processing as they’re fresh foods.

The company prides itself on its ethical sourcing. Solutions sources from local regenerative farms in Pennsylvania. Proteins are from pastured and grass-fed livestock. They also use sustainable seafood. All produce is organic so the risk of pesticide residue is low. However, they don’t provide any certifications.

Solutions makes its products in facilities that produce human food. They follow the same handling and storage rules. Solutions maintains ecological standards with eco-friendly packaging. They do not use HPP for pathogen control.

The company doesn’t state whether fish used is wild-caught or farmed. Wild-caught fish is more nutritious. It has a better fatty acid balance. This is important if the purpose is to add omega-3 fatty acids.

It’s also worth noting that the company doesn’t provide the omega-6:omega-3 ratio. AAFCO allows a very inflammatory ratio of 30:1. This is an unfortunate omission by a company committed to quality.

Evaluation Criteria

For our Solutions Pet Products dog food review, we’ll look at the food ingredient quality and safety of each line of food. Our dog food reviews are based on these criteria.

We evaluate and score dog foods based on two criteria:

Are the Ingredients High Quality?

Here are some common low quality ingredients or markers we look for:

  • Is there excessive carbohydrate content, which can cause gut imbalances?
  • Does the food contain unnamed proteins, which are low quality?
  • Does the food use cellulose (wood pulp) as a source of fiber instead of real food?
  • Are there excessive vitamins and minerals added in place of real food nutrition?
  • Are there excessive added amino acids or plant proteins instead of expensive meat protein?
  • Does the food contain inflammatory processed seed oils?

How Safe Are the Ingredients?

Many ingredients come from unhealthy, inflammatory sources or are full of pesticides so we look for:

  • How processed is the food?
  • Does the food contain known genetically modified foods?
  • Does the food contain ingredients known to be high in pesticides?
  • Does the food contain natural flavor, which are often MSG or animal digest?
  • Does the food contain rice, which is high in arsenic?

Each food is objectively evaluated by these criteria and a score is assigned using the average of ingredient quality and safety.

This is NOT a paid list and there are no affiliate links. We’ve partnered with DogFoodReviews.com to make sure dog owners have unbiased, objective criteria to help them choose the best dog food on the market. You can view the full Evaluation Criteria at DogFoodReviews.com.
